  • Overview / Responsibilities

    Wood is currently seeking a Project Safety (HSSE) Manager. The position of HSSE Manager reports directly to the Area Safety Manager, and indirectly to the Director of HSSE for the Wood  Power & Process group. The position calls for candidates with passion and drive. This is a mid-level to senior role that requires a high level of commitment and dedication to the health and wellbeing of others in our industry. The ideal candidate will have education, training, and experience in the fields of occupational safety and health and construction commensurate with the desired position. This includes experience with HSSE programs and concepts, training, injury care, program implementation, auditing, employee and supervisor engagement, and other HSSE experience that may not be listed here. **The project site is 100% Tobacco-Free**

    • Positively influence the Project by action, belief and conviction in the human system of safety management
    • Improve performance by setting an example of no compromise safety excellence 

    Prime Responsibilities & Duties

    • Support the Project’s HSSE initiatives and programs
    • Provide technical guidance to the assigned Project
    • Review existing policies and procedures, making recommendations for improvement
    • Assist in the development of new HSSE policies and procedures to meet Project and overall Wood needs
    • Implement HSSE management systems that support the Project needs - These can include site-specific plans and programs
    • Utilize Wood audit protocols
    • Participate in incident investigation and root cause analysis processes, and prepare required report(s)
    • Regularly communicate the status of the Project’s HSSE culture and performance with Project Management
    • Assist supervision and employees in the planning, recognition, evaluation, and mediation of risk for the Project
    • Provide oversight for contractors and subcontractors as necessary to ensure compliance with Wood policy and procedure
    • Assure compliance with all applicable legislative, client, and Wood requirements for the Project
    • Facilitate and/or conduct HSSE training for the project as needed, and assure training is tracked internally as required
    • Communicate effectively and regularly with Wood employees, supervision, and management
    • Implement the Wood Drug & Alcohol Program at the project level
    • Provide injury management and care for employees, and provide timely and accurate reporting
    • Compile and share safety lessons learned across Wood


    Skills / Qualifications

    • Minimum of 10 years of experience in Construction HSSE management, with at least 5 years in a management role
    • Capable of providing HSSE oversight for large projects (>250 employees)
    • OSHA 500
    • NCCER Safety Technology (optional)
    • NCCER ICTP Course for Instructors (Optional)
    • CPR/AED/First Aid Certification
    • Additional leadership or HSSE based continuing education
    • Thorough understanding of construction work practices.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication; includes use of proper grammar, spelling, etc.
    • High level of integrity for reporting as well as upholding company policy, personal activities, etc.
    • Full and complete understanding of all aspects of HSSE management including personnel development, law, policies, client management, etc.
    • Ability to foster compromise that meets needs of operations while in line w/ policy
    • Ability to speak well in front of groups to deliver training, meetings, etc.
    • Ability to manage HSSE teams and department
    • Ability to write, develop and implement HSSE policies and procedures
    • Ability to interact with any client
    • Ability to interact with all levels of Wood management
    • PREFERRED: Nationally recognized certifications (CSP, ASP. CHST, or OHST) and/or Degree in Occupational Safety & Health or related field
    • Occasional travel may be required

    Physical Requirements

    • May be required to lift and carry items weighing no more than 50 pounds
    • Must possess enough strength and stamina to perform the responsibilities and duties as identified above
    • Must be able to move in and around confined spaces and uneven areas
    • Must have full range of motion consistent with age
    • May be required consistently to work 12+ hour shifts performing construction based labor in varying temperature extremes and conditions
    • May be required, on occasion, to work up to 16 hours in a single shift
    • Must be able to climb and maintain balance on stairs, ladders, scaffolds and steel framework
    • Must be able to adequately hear and respond to voice commands and alerts from other employees, alarms, and other job related noises
    • Visual acuity, depth perception and color discrimination consistent with that required to work at heights and on uneven surfaces
    • Frequently required to stand and walk
    • Occasionally required to sit, drive, squat, kneel, bend and twist
