  • Overview / Responsibilities

    Wood Environment & Infrastructure Solutions is seeking a Junior Level Geologist/Engineer/Scientist to join our team in Blue Bell, PA.

     

    The position will require well developed judgement, planning, organizational and communication (both written and verbal) skills, and will be responsible for bringing these skills to bear in leading and conducting field investigations.   The position will be expected to assist project managers in compliance reporting, development of conceptual and detailed remediation designs, implementing field investigations, develop engineers cost estimates for construction, conduct data analyses as directed, and prepare written reports of methodologies, findings and conclusions.  Comfort using standard computer software for the engineering applications and the office is required.   Some knowledge of federal RCRA, CERCLA, NPDES regulations, NJ Site Remediation Program, or PA Act 2 is desirable.

     

    Candidate may require orientation and training in the nature of the consulting business, i.e., how to be a consultant, how to write proposals, reports, client correspondence and internal documents, and how to gain familiarity with the standard procedures and practices associated with his/her discipline. Typically, most or all time is spent performing project assignments.  Typical project assignments include collecting or compiling data, either in the field or from published and unpublished materials, entering data into and extracting data from standard computer programs, and researching regulatory or technical requirements. Incumbent commonly required to travel to field assignments. May also be given technical writing or analysis assignments, which may be limited in scope or complexity. All work performed by the incumbent will be under the close supervision of the project manager or more senior personnel.

     

    Essential Tasks and Responsibilities:

    • Performs field sampling observations and data collection assignments under the direct supervision or guidance of more experienced field personnel
    • Performs standard or routine calculations - May input data into and/or run standard or, in some cases, advanced computer programs under supervision
    • Compiles information from reports and published documents - May, under limited supervision, evaluate or analyze the compiled information following standard methods or specific instructions
    • Recognizes and identifies discrepancies in results obtained in such assignments and follow up through a series of related steps or procedures, as directed by more senior personnel; refers unresolved situations and/or activities to the project manager
    • Under direct supervision of the project manager or senior staff, represents the Firm and interacts in a professional manner with client and subcontractor representatives while on field assignments
    • Responsible for ensuring the Firm’s administrative and financial policies and procedures as well as the methods and procedures specific to his/her specific discipline are followed
    • Understands and applies safety requirements in the field

    Additional Tasks and Responsibilities:

    • May be responsible for coordinating with subcontractors (such as analytical laboratories and drillers) while performing office assignments
    • May be responsible for reviewing client documents or assessing existing site conditions on routine projects or under routine circumstances - All findings of such work will be reviewed and approved by the project manager or other senior personnel
    • May be responsible for preparing complete drafts of simple, non-complex technical reports; alternately, may prepare drafts of portions of technical reports, manuals and field reports - All drafts must be reviewed in detail and approved by the project manager or senior personnel
    • If requested to participate in proposal preparation (work scope, task-level budgeting, cost estimates), may perform calculations, gather or review information, or prepare standard sections of proposals - All assignments related to the proposal preparation will be reviewed in detail and approved by the project manager or senior personnel
    • May attend client meetings with project manager and other project personnel
    • May assist in the preparation of technical papers for publication or presentation
    • Other duties as assigned

    Skills / Qualifications

    Education, Experience and Skills Required:

    • 0 – 2 years of prior related work experience; experience in fieldwork is desirable
    • Bachelor’s Degree in related field required; Master’s Degree a plus
    • Experience with desktop and industry-specific software (e.g., MSOffice, AutoCAD, and MSProject) desired
    • Hands on knowledge of the use of field equipment desirable
    • Must have sound written and verbal communication skills
    • Ability to establish effective internal and external working relationships
    • Ability to communicate clearly with on-site contractors, supervisor or project manager regarding work assignments required

    Physical Job Requirements:

    • Ability to stoop, kneel, climb and lift up to 50 pounds
    • Ability to drive large pick-up truck; ability to drive a trailer helpful
    • Ability to use hands to operate field equipment
    • Close, distance, and peripheral vision; normal auditory function
    • Must complete employment physical demonstrating ability to meet job requirements, including the ability to wear a respirator, as required
    • Completion of annual or bi-annual employment physical, as required

    License / Certification Requirements:

    • Geologist-in-Training or Engineer-in-Training preferred, but not necessary
    • Valid driver’s license and insurable driving record
    • Must pass 40 Hour HAZWOPER Training and annual refresher course

    Machines, Tools and/or Equipment Used:

    • Field tools and equipment
    • Pickup truck and/or other motor vehicle(s); some locations require individual to have their own vehicle
    • Office equipment such as photocopy machine and fax machine
    • Personal computer and desk top software (e.g., MSOffice)

    Work Environment:

    • May require work at remote sites around construction equipment, drilling rigs, explosives and environmental contamination
    • Overtime and overnight stays required
    • Some fieldwork may require working with hazardous materials and in hazardous conditions
    • May be subject to periods of extreme heat and cold and other environmental conditions such as wind as humidity
    • Will be required to follow all applicable health and safety procedures associated with work environment

    Travel:

    • May travel frequently to project sites depending on particular assignment, including sites remote from the office, as part of on-site team
