  • Overview / Responsibilities

    Wood Environment & Infrastructure Solutions is currently seeking an Environmental Engineer with previous consultant experience in all conventional aspects of the environmental business. The ideal candidate is a problem solver that can function independently with moderate supervision. Bachelor’s degree is required in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related discipline; Master’s degree or some graduate level education preferred. This position will involve reviewing and/or managing moderately complex project tasks within area of expertise or of a multi-disciplinary nature. Some low to moderate level business development/client management experience is preferred.


    Experience: 5 to 8 years with progressively greater responsibility


    Licenses: Engineer-in-Training or recent Professional Engineer’s License


    Position Summary

    The position will require well developed judgement, planning, organizational and communication (both written and verbal) skills for leading and conducting field investigations.   The position will be expected to assist project managers in OM&M, compliance reporting, development of conceptual and detailed remediation designs, implementing field investigations, develop engineers cost estimates for construction, conduct data analyses, and prepare written reports of methodologies, findings and conclusions. Some standard project assignments include conducting complex engineering, scientific assessment and analysis, and/or managing tasks of specific projects. The position will be expected to help project managers prepare proposals for potential work with a varying degree of clients. Comfort using standard computer software for engineering applications during project related office activities is required.   Knowledge of federal RCRA, CERCLA, NPDES regulations, NJ Site Remediation Program, or PA Act 2 is desirable.


    Essential Tasks and Responsibilities

    • Performs and oversees field sampling observations and data collection assignments; These assignments will be performed with minimal supervision and may entail managing a team of personnel for field assignments
    • Performs analyses for specific portions of broader engineering and environmental projects; Demonstrates competency in a combination of areas including field supervision, technical knowledge, and task management
    • Responsible for making correct interpretations of findings and recognizes and identifies inconsistent or inappropriate results; knows how and when to apply standard practices and techniques to unusual situations; knows when to consult with more senior-level technical professionals regarding how to resolve a problem, respond to a question or take an action that is appropriate
    • Assumes responsibility and accountability for managing medium to large tasks for projects under the general direction of appropriate more senior-level technical professional; develops project strategy and scope with more senior personnel
    • Manages and communicates results, budget and schedule information to the project manager
    • Under limited supervision, represents Wood and interacts in a professional manner with client and subcontractor representatives while on field assignments
    • Understands, applies and oversees safety requirements in the field

    Additional Tasks and Responsibilities

    • Responsible for coordinating with subcontractors (such as analytical laboratories and drillers) while performing office assignments
    • Responsible for reviewing client documents or assessing existing site conditions on routine projects or under routine circumstances; All findings of such work will be reviewed and approved by the project manager or other senior personnel
    • Responsible for preparing complete drafts of technical reports, manuals and field reports; All drafts must be reviewed in detail and approved by the project manager or senior personnel
    • If requested, to participate in proposal preparation (work scope, task-level budgeting, cost estimates), may perform calculations, gather or review information, or prepare standard sections of proposals; All assignments related to the proposal preparation will be reviewed in detail and approved by the project manager or senior personnel
    • May attend client meetings with project manager and other project personnel
    • May assist in the preparation of technical papers for publication or presentation
    • Expected to join at least one professional association
    • Encouraged to develop the ability to prepare technical papers for external publications, and to make presentations to professional or client groups
    • Other duties as assigned

    Skills / Qualifications

    Education, Experience and Skills Required

    • 5 – 8 years of prior related work experience
    • Bachelor’s Degree in related field required; Master’s Degree a plus
    • Significant knowledge of and experience with industry specific software (e.g., MSOffice, AutoCAD and MSProject) required
    • Hands on knowledge of the use of field equipment desired
    • Must have sound written and verbal communication skills
    • Ability to establish effective internal and external working relationships
    • Ability to communicate clearly with on-site contractors, supervisor or project manager regarding work assignments required
    • Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems
    • Demonstrated task management skills
    • Demonstrated maturity in judgment, initiative and client relations

    License / Certification Requirements

    • Valid driver’s license and insurable driving record
    • 40 Hour HAZWOPER Training and 8 Hour annual refresher course required

    Machines, Tools and/or Equipment Used

    • Field tools and equipment, if needed
    • Pickup truck and/or other motor vehicle(s), if needed
    • Office equipment such as photocopy machine and fax machine
    • Personal computer and desk top software (e.g., MSOffice)

    Work Environment

    • May occasionally require work at remote sites around construction equipment, drilling rigs, explosives and environmental contamination
    • Overtime and overnight stays may be required
    • Some fieldwork may occasionally require working with hazardous materials and in hazardous conditions
    • Worker would not typically be substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions
    • Will be required to follow all applicable health and safety procedures associated with work environment


    • May travel frequently to project sites, including sites remote from the office, as part of on-site team

    Physical Job Requirements

    • Ability to stoop, kneel, climb and lift up to 50 pounds
    • Ability to drive large pick-up truck; ability to drive a trailer helpful
    • Ability to use hands to operate field equipment
    • Close, distance, and peripheral vision; normal auditory function
    • Must complete employment physical demonstrating ability to meet job requirements, including the ability to wear a respirator, as required
    • Completion of annual or bi-annual employment physical, as required
