  • Overview / Responsibilities

    Wood Environment & Infrastructure Solutions is currently seeking an Entry-Level Geotechnical/Civil Engineer to work with our railroad project team based in Nashville, TN covering projects within continental U.S, primarily in the Eastern U.S. Selected candidate expected to gain familiarity with railroad engineering and consulting and perform project assignments related to civil, environmental, and geotechnical disciplines. Travel to project locations on frequent basis is required. Selected candidate will be expected to learn and/or understand field data collection techniques including surveying, geotechnical drilling and sampling, field and laboratory testing. Selected candidate will be expected to compile data into client deliverable report formats. Selected candidate will be given technical writing and data analysis assignments, which may be limited in scope and complexity. All work performed by the selected candidate will be under the close supervision of the project manager or more senior personnel.    


    Key Responsibilities

    • During early phase of employment, selected candidate may perform full-time construction oversight on rail construction projects lasting up to 6 months in duration (although more commonly 1-2 months) - This includes regular travel to or short-term stay near project locations
    • Duties to include contractor oversight and documentation, quantity tracking, daily reporting and regular interaction with project manager - Expected to become familiar with geotechnical and environmental considerations for rail or roadbed construction projects - Construction related travel expected to diminish with time as selected candidate gains knowledge and understanding of related construction activities
    • Performs field sampling and testing, including collection and logging of field samples - This includes geotechnical drilling, instrumentation monitoring, survey (layout), and visual observation and recording of site conditions
    • Performs standard or routine calculations - May input data into and/or run standard or, in some cases, advanced computer programs under supervision - Shall include analysis of slope stability, rock fall, deep and shallow foundations
    • Expected to develop ability to recognize and understand environmental regulations governing various rail or roadbed construction projects
    • Compiles information from reports and published documents - May, under limited supervision, evaluate or analyze the compiled information following standard methods or specific instructions
    • Recognizes and identifies discrepancies in results obtained in such assignments and follow up through a series of related steps or procedures, as directed by more senior personnel - Refers unresolved situations and/or activities to the project manager
    • Under direct supervision of the project manager or senior staff, represents Wood and interacts in a professional manner with client and subcontractor representatives while on field assignments
    • Responsible for ensuring the Firm’s administrative and financial policies and procedures as well as the methods and procedures specific to his/her specific discipline are followed
    • Understands and applies safety requirements in the field

    Additional Tasks and Responsibilities

    • Will be responsible for coordinating with subcontractors (such as analytical laboratories and drillers) while performing office assignments
    • Will be responsible for reviewing client documents or assessing existing site conditions on routine projects or under routine circumstances - All findings of such work will be reviewed and approved by the project manager or other senior personnel
    • Will be responsible for preparing complete drafts of simple, non-complex technical reports; alternately, may prepare drafts of portions of technical reports, manuals and field reports - All drafts must be reviewed in detail and approved by the project manager or senior personnel
    • If requested to participate in proposal preparation (work scope, task-level budgeting, cost estimates), may perform calculations, gather or review information, or prepare standard sections of proposals - All assignments related to the proposal preparation will be reviewed in detail and approved by the project manager or senior personnel
    • May attend client meetings with project manager and other project personnel

    Skills / Qualifications

    • 0 – 2 years of prior related work experience; experience in fieldwork is desirable
    • Bachelor’s Degree in related field required; Master’s Degree a plus
    • Seeking to or has passed Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination
    • Experience with desktop and industry-specific software including AutoCAD, MicroStation, MS Excel, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Project
    • Hands on knowledge of the use of field equipment desirable
    • Must have sound written and verbal communication skills
    • Ability to establish effective internal and external working relationships
    • Ability to communicate clearly with on-site contractors, supervisor or project manager regarding work assignments required
    • Valid driver’s license and insurable driving record

    Physical Job Requirements 

    • Ability to stoop, kneel, climb and lift up to 50 pounds
    • Ability to drive large pick-up truck; ability to drive a trailer helpful
    • Ability to use hands to operate field equipment
    • Close, distance, and peripheral vision; normal auditory function
    • Must complete employment physical demonstrating ability to meet job requirements, including the ability to wear a respirator, as required
    • Completion of annual or bi-annual employment physical, if required
    • Must be able to physically traverse hilly terrain, including distances up to 5 miles

    Machines, Tools and/or Equipment Used 

    • Field tools and equipment
    • Pickup truck and/or other motor vehicle(s); some locations require individual to have their own vehicle
    • Office equipment such as photocopy machine and fax machine
    • Personal computer and desk top software (e.g., MSOffice)

    Work Environment 

    • May require work at remote sites around construction equipment, drilling rigs, explosives and environmental contamination or in confined spaces such as tunnels or mines
    • Overtime and overnight stays required
    • Some fieldwork may require working with hazardous materials and in hazardous conditions
    • May be subject to periods of extreme heat and cold and other environmental conditions such as wind as humidity
    • Will be required to follow all applicable health and safety procedures associated with work environment


    • May travel frequently to project sites depending on particular assignment, including sites remote from the office, as part of on-site team
