  • Overview / Responsibilities

    Wood is currently seeking a Director Operations to be based out of our office in Nashville, TN.

     

    The Director Operations will be responsible for the day-to-day construction operations, onsite safety, client service and financial wellbeing of all projects under their supervision.

     

    A key individual responsible for collaborating with Business Development team to manage clients and opportunities that are a fit with Heavy Civils strategic goals. Attends client presentations, sales events, as required.

     

    Effective communicator within all internal departments. Ability to communicate with all levels of personnel.

     

    Has the proven ability to mentor, manage and train a successful quality-driven construction operations team. Ensures project/program teams provide superior client service and produce a quality construction project(s). Ensure support services provide superior client service and produce quality results.

     

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

     

    Business Development

    • Participate in analysis discussions with leadership; Work in collaboration with Business Development to execute strategic plan to achieve sales targets and expand customer base
    • Participate and contribute to preparation of client RFP responses
    • Collaborate and participate with sales opportunities

    Construction Operations

    • Overall responsibility for construction projects: achieving timeliness, quality, and client satisfaction; Works collaboratively with the area managers and site superintendents to ensure each divisions financial and client service goals are established and maintained; Profit Margin goals are established for each division; Client service goals are met
    • Establish Construction Operations - Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), enabling timely course-corrections and provide a basis for strategic planning long term and short term
    • Coordinate with project managers and site superintendents to ensure projects and programs are planned, executed and supported efficiently to maximize the client’s expectations and maintains schedule and budget; Provide leadership and direction that maximizes the company goals of profit, quality and client service
    • Improve processes of Construction Operations Department; including, but not limited to: purchasing, contract negotiation, operational systems, job-costing, project management skills training and development, client service initiatives, safety programs, financial accountability
    • Perform client and job site visits as required to ensure quality and safety standards are being maintained and improved
    • Conduct weekly ‘One-on-One’ meetings with direct reports to discuss their priorities, project status and financials
    • Responsible for setting guidelines for personnel evaluations, recruitment, advancement and compensation

    Estimating

    • Review and approve client bids prepared by estimating department to ensure integrity of numbers/scope of work. Negotiate client proposals
    • Coordinate with Sr. Estimators to develop pricing models for programs
    • Ensure timely and accurate delivery of client estimates; Complete documentation, RFP requirements fulfilled

    Financial and Legal

    • Establish Financial Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), enabling timely course-corrections and provide a basis for strategic planning long term and short term
    • Perform Monthly WIP review with Owner; Schedules all monthly WIP meetings with project teams, as required; Evaluate Project Management financial results related to budget adherence and profitability
    • Ensures timely update to finance department for monthly financial reports
    • Maintain oversight of Division Accounts Receivable; Act as escalation resource for client past due A/R
    • Manage the annual overhead budgets for construction division(s)
    • Labor Resource Management
    • Establish Personnel Resource Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), enabling timely course-corrections and provide a basis for strategic planning long term and short term
    • Attend and provide direction within the weekly Field Resource planning meeting with Resource Manager and Construction Directors; Identify field resource needs and assignments; Identify PM resource needs and workload/assignments
    • Ensure training is provided for Project Management, Field Personnel as related to perform their job functions and enhance existing skill set; Ongoing safety training program-required
    • Participate in recruitment & termination of reporting staff; Performance Management and facilitate the annual review process of direct and indirect staff; Perform annual reviews of personnel and provide timely feedback as needed

    Safety

    • Promote a safe working culture for employees; Work with safety and field personnel to minimize risk and increase safety
    • Ensure all federal, state and local laws concerning safety environment and other applicable areas are adhered to

    Skills / Qualifications

    Education

    • Higher education related to Business Management / Construction Management or other related disciplines preferred and/or equivalent combination of knowledge, skills and abilities

    Experience and Requirements

    • Minimum 15 years work experience and minimum 5-7+ years upper management experience in Construction Industry
    • Experience in strategic planning and execution
    • Client Service oriented
    • Solid knowledge of construction processes and procedures
    • Experience in managing and directing large teams/employees; ability to manage, direct and motivate others.
    • Experience with construction contracting/review and negotiation; risk management
    • High standard of ethics, integrity and trust; ability to present professionally
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Excellent analytical and negotiation skills
    • Strong Project Management knowledge – means and methods

    Work Environment

    • Fast-paced office environment
    • Ability to travel, as required (client meetings, office-to-office, job sites, sales presentations, etc.)
    • Must be available as needed during non-traditional work hours
