  • Overview / Responsibilities

    Wood’s Phoenix office is seeking a Senior Environmental Scientist/Project Manager with a minimum of 15 years of experience to support our growing environmental compliance practice. Our office is a leading engineering consulting business in Arizona, providing multi-disciplinary solutions covering all aspects of environmental consulting services, geotechnical engineering, infrastructure design and management, construction services, materials testing/engineering and water supply and resources services.

     

    We will consider candidates interested in full-time or part-time.

     

    Key Responsibilities

     

    Duties include leadership, project management and execution of client deliverables for municipalities, state and federal agencies, and commercial, energy and mining clients. This position will support on-going and future environmental projects including: Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs); Soil and Groundwater Assessments and Remediation, Underground Storage Tank Removals and Aboveground Storage Tank installations; Property Transaction Screens, Property Condition Assessments, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) Assessments, Environmental Compliance Audits, Asbestos and Lead-Based Paint Assessments and Abatement, and Hazardous Waste Management projects. The successful applicant must have broad understanding of this industry and the environmental requirements/regulations applicable to these clients. Technical report development, client management, regulatory agency coordination and permitting, and quality control management are preferred skills. Flexibility and willingness to work as part of an in interdisciplinary team is a must. Experience with developing proposals, costs estimates, and obtaining new clients are also desired.

     

    Key responsibilities include the following:

     

    • Work as a strong seller/doer to identify new and grow key client accounts
    • Participate in developing and driving growth strategies for our environmental business including networking outside and inside Wood
    • Support achieving sales and operational benchmarks
    • Manage environmental projects for industrial, commercial, state, and federal clients
    • Prepare proposals and assists in preparation of large-scale proposals
    • Prepare Health and Safety Plans (HASPs), and demonstrate the ability to implement safe work practices in the field in accordance with the HASP and other applicable regulations
    • Evaluate findings, make recommendations, and prepare written and verbal reports
    • Excellent writing and communication skills
    • Oversee junior staff, site work and manage subcontractors
    • Manage client relationships
    • Meet with clients and deliver presentations, as appropriate

    Skills / Qualifications

    • Bachelor of Science degree in environmental science, environmental studies, geology, engineering or a related discipline plus 15 years of experience
    • A minimum 15 years of Phase I and II ESA experience, and strong working knowledge of ASTM Standard E1527-13
    • Must be able to solve problems independently, using knowledge gained from increasing experience
    • Self-sufficient, self-motivated and ability to work under pressure of deadlines
    • Must be able to work as team member with people of differing backgrounds and experience levels
    • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
    • Ability to use laboratory and/or test equipment in an effective and safe manner
    • Job assignments may involve work on waste disposal sites and sites requiring cleanup of hazardous materials. Participation in an OSHA-mandated medical surveillance program will be required, and safety training will be provided before being assigned to work on these sites - Applicants must be able to wear a full-face respirator
    • Applicants must be able to work in locations that feature the rough terrain typical of construction sites and to enter and work within facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities
    • 40 hour OSHA HAZWOPER trained
    • AHERA Building Inspector a must. Management Planner, Contractor/Supervisor, Project Designer certified a plus
    • EPA Lead-Based Paint Building Inspector and Risk Assessor certified a plus
    • Ability to understand procedural manuals and execute work orders
    • Attention to detail
    • Ability to follow directions

    Physical Job Requirements

     

    • Ability to stoop, kneel, climb and lift up to 50 pounds
    • Ability to use hands to operate field equipment
    • Close, distance, and peripheral vision; normal auditory function
    • Completion of annual or bi-annual employment physical, as required
    • Valid driver’s license and insurable driving record
    • Must pass Health and Safety Training and Defensive Driving Courses upon hire
    • Ability and willingness to travel to project sites primarily in Arizona
    • Overnight travel may be required
