    Terra Nova Technologies (TNT), a subsidiary of Wood, based near San Diego, California, designs, supplies, delivers and installs material handling systems for mining and mineral processing, coal, aggregate and chemical processing projects throughout the world.   We have delivered mobile stacking systems, belt conveyor systems and crushing plants to projects in 16 countries. As an Original Equipment Manufacturer, our expertise includes multi-disciplinary engineering, international component sourcing and specialty steel fabrication in several shops around the world.


    We currently have an exciting opportunity for an Estimator in our Santee, California office.


    You're a seasoned Estimator with 10+ years of experience working in multi-disciplinary industrial fabrication, manufacturing and/or construction projects. You will perform quantity take offs, cost analysis, sub-trade negotiations, vendor quotation solicitation, competitive bid management and document control. You will participate in estimating activities involved in preparing hard bid, cost plus and design build proposals for projects.


    Key Responsibilities


    • Prepares the solicitation of trades and quotations regarding bid invitations, pricing, addenda, and tender/bid closings
    • Prepares quantity take-offs for all areas of the estimate while ensuring the take-off is well notated for hand-over to the project team and includes safety and security requirements required by TNT policies and applicable legislation
    • With support and input from engineering, prepares quantity take-offs for structural steel, platework, concrete, cladding, piping, electrical cabling, cable tray, conduits and other miscellaneous materials
    • Analyzes plans, specifications, proposals, and other documentation to prepare bid estimates for projects, performs complete estimates on selected projects consisting of project site visit, quantity take-off, pricing, and presentation of the estimate for management review
    • Applies knowledge and skills through the handling of complex problems and shares expertise with the estimating team in an ongoing effort to develop, recommend revisions and implement procedures, standards, rules and regulations
    • Evaluates and presents or supports the presentation of estimate proposals
    • Prepares conceptual estimates by interpreting historical data
    • Researches and analyzes cost data for review and presentation to management
    • Interfaces and communicates effectively (written and oral) with other estimating staff, all levels of management, clients and Industry
    • Contacts and develops business relationships with subcontractors and suppliers for pricing within estimates
    • May perform other related duties as assigned

    Skills / Qualifications

    • 10+ years estimating experience, with at least 5 years' estimating experience in heavy industrial manufacturing and/or construction projects, preferably related to mining equipment and mineral processing
    • Completion of post-secondary education with a diploma or degree related to Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, Estimating or Engineering or related education is required
    • Technical knowledge of modern steel fabrication and industrial construction practices, techniques and equipment
    • Understanding of RFP documents, specifications, scopes of work and technical data
    • Strong computer background including experience with MS Office, in particular a high proficiency with Excel
    • An understanding of construction costs and documents and the ability to assess the level of completeness and develop a project schedule
    • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work under pressure, problem solve and work in a team environment and while promoting teamwork by motivating, coaching and guiding others
    • Ability to identify problems/issues, looks beyond the immediate problem to the wider implications and generates new solutions to complex problems
    • Creates and maintains formal networks internally and externally
    • Ability to communicate proficiently and professionally, oral and written, with suppliers, team members, management and clients
