  • Overview / Responsibilities

    Wood Environment & Infrastructure Solutions is seeking a Field Technician 4 to join our team in Charlotte, NC. Solves problems requiring some advanced technical judgment. May deal directly with clients on routine matters. May be a specialist in one or more technical activities. Works under   limited supervision. Performs a wide variety of routine tests or procedures, routine analysis or calculations to check accuracy, applicability and validity of data. May draft simple or standard reports and may have some direct contact with clients. Works under limited supervision, to provide moderately complex test support to engineering, field or laboratory projects. Specific positions in the technician career path include field technician, engineering technician and laboratory technician.


    Essential Tasks and Responsibilities


    • Conduct tests and investigations in the field or laboratory to obtain data for use by engineering personnel in determining engineering properties of soil, bedrock and construction materials
    • Perform laboratory and field tests according to prescribed ASTM or AASHTO procedures, processes, and standards
    • Collect soil samples, prepare samples for testing, record data, and prepare summary reports
    • Use specialized equipment and apparatus to prepare analysis, reports and/or technical drawing


    Additional Tasks and Responsibilities


    • Operate computer systems and peripheral equipment
    • Maintain results logs
    • Confer with Engineer and Scientific staff on test and design efforts
    • Set up, maintain, and calibrate equipment
    • Serve in a lead worker capacity providing work direction and training to lower level technician staff
    • Responsible for the effective management of own time and effort in accordance with project priorities and objectives
    • Ensure adherence to cost controls as directed by supervisor

    Skills / Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree or combination of technical education, PDH's, licensure, and certification plus 5 to 12 years of industry experience
    • NCDOT certification for testing of soils and concrete
    • Special Inspections certification
    • In-depth knowledge and understanding of project focus
    • Ability to use laboratory and test equipment in an effective and safe manner
    • Ability to understand and procedural manuals and execute work orders
    • Ability to prepare moderately complex reports and documentation
    • Pays attention to detail and trains junior level techs to be detail oriented
    • Ability to work with minimal supervision
    • Leadership and interpersonal skills
    Physical Job Requirements


    • Ability to stoop, kneel, climb and lift up to 50 pounds
    • Ability to drive large pick-up truck
    • Ability to use hands to operate field equipment
    • Close, distance, and peripheral vision; normal auditory function
    • Must complete employment physical demonstrating ability to meet job requirements, including the ability to wear a respirator, as required
    • Completion of annual or bi-annual employment physical, as required

    License / Certification Requirements


    • Qualifications to include experience and NCDOT and Special Inspections certifications
      • Materials: NCDOT Soil and Concrete; Special Inspections
    • Valid driver’s license and insurable driving record
    • Must pass Health and Safety Training and Defensive Driving Courses upon hire

    Machines, Tools and/or Equipment Used


    • Field tools and equipment
    • Pickup truck and/or other motor vehicle(s); some locations require individual to have their own vehicle
    • On occasion, office equipment such as photocopy machine and fax machine
    • Personal computer and desk top software (e.g., MSOffice)

    Work Environment


    • May be required to work at remote sites around construction equipment, drilling rigs, explosives and environmental contamination
    • Overtime and overnight stays may be required
    • Some fieldwork may require working with hazardous materials and in hazardous conditions



    • May spend most or all of time in the field, including at sites remote from the office, as part of on-site team
