Overview / Responsibilities

Wood’s US based Process & Energy group is a focused supplier of high-value consultancy, engineering, project management and project delivery, operations and construction services. Locally the Minneapolis office provides services to many companies whose businesses are focused in the agri-processing, bio-systems/bio-products, power (conventional and renewable), food & beverage, and chemicals market place. Our projects range from general consulting to full multi-discipline designs cumulating in construction work package development and site based commissioning and startup support. Typical projects range in size from a few thousand dollars for studies and consulting work to several million dollars for large scale multi-discipline engineering efforts.


Wood currently has an exciting leadership opportunity for a Mechanical & Piping Engineering Department Manager. Reporting to the Minneapolis Director of Operations, this position is in our Minneapolis, MN office. This role has overall responsibility for development, management and technical leadership of the Minneapolis mechanical and piping engineering and design team. Key Responsibilities


  • Managing and directing the activities of Minneapolis mechanical & piping engineers and designers, including assigning staff to projects and development activities with a view to career development and succession planning
  • Creating and adjusting staffing plans to meet project requirements
  • Developing detailed proposals including mechanical & piping engineering and design scope of service, deliverables and man-hour estimates
  • Develop and enhance superior mechanical & piping engineering capabilities while maintaining our high-quality brand through work assignments, training and recruiting activities
  • Interface both locally and throughout the greater organization with managers and technical directors in other offices to develop staffing plans for consulting projects sourced from Minneapolis or other Wood offices
  • Participating in office business development activities through strategic client relationship management and industry contacts in cooperation with the local operations and business development managers
  • Facilitate business development and client relationship building through promotion of Wood’s engineering and design services
  • Work in a safe manner, complying with and actively contributing to the Wood Health, Safety, Security and Environmental (HSSE) policies, manuals and procedures. At all times considering the health, safety and welfare of fellow workers, visitors, clients, community and the environment
  • Coordinating with the human resources department for recruiting and developing mechanical & piping engineering and design staff, establishing best-in-class professional competencies, to grow and expand the technical capabilities of the group
  • Managing departmental budgets and reimbursability targets
  • Actively engaging in and supporting the Wood performance feedback process for all direct reports
  • Participating as part of the office management team and contributing to the growth and development of the Minneapolis office, while meeting defined business performance objectives.
  • Ensure that the Mechanical & Piping department deliverables meet industry standards of care, client requirements, and is aligned with Wood organizational objectives, systems and procedures

Skills / Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from an accredited engineering curriculum with a minimum of 10 years’ experience
  • Experience in plant design and operational needs
  • Ability to establish relevant work practices
  • Ability to develop new planning systems and affect change in an organization
  • Skills in teamwork, team leadership, supervision and coordination
  • Strong communication skills both oral and written
  • Diplomatic and collaborative approach to managing interactions between company and client teams
  • Strong ability and interest in mentoring staff of all levels
  • Desire and ability to intervene to resolve issues and improve quality

Preference given to candidates with:


  • Exposure to coordination of multi-discipline projects
  • Experience working in the Consulting Engineering industry
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Professional Engineer Licensure
  • Master’s Degree in Engineering, business administration or other related discipline
  • Experience in developing mechanical & piping capital cost and engineering estimates
