Overview / Responsibilities

Wood Environment & Infrastructure Solutions is seeking a multi-talented Geotechnical Engineer who is also skilled and interested in working on civil and environmental work. The Wood Portland, Maine Office is a multi-disciplinary science/engineering/architecture team of 150+ staff that offers the opportunity to work on technically challenging projects for a wide range of clients throughout the US.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

The ideal candidate will have a solid background in geotechnical, civil, and environmental engineering as well as excellent interpersonal skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and will be a proactive problem solver. This position offers the opportunity to work with, learn from, and be mentored by senior engineering staff while executing the following roles/responsibilities:

 

  • Conduct evaluation and design-related tasks including: slope stability analyses; settlement and bearing capacity evaluations for shallow and deep foundations and surcharges, permanent and temporary excavation support measures, and landfill caps; seepage and piping evaluations; and vertical hydraulic barriers
  • Plan, conduct, and implement geotechnical and environmental field investigations, including directing drilling and excavation contractors
  • Monitor and oversee drilling, earthwork, and construction activities
  • Prepare construction field reports and internal correspondence
  • Analyze and interpret environmental data and prepare routine monitoring reports
  • Travel for both short-term and long-term field assignments to monitor construction, meet clients, and/or visit sites in support of design and construction
  • Review, evaluate, and compile field and laboratory data, and conduct engineering evaluations for design of geotechnical, civil, environmental construction projects
  • Prepare geotechnical investigation reports in support of design and construction projects
  • Prepare design drawings and specifications, bidding documents, and construction summary documents

Skills / Qualifications

Basic/Required Qualifications

 

  • BS in Civil/Geotechnical Engineering
  • 2 to 7 years of engineering, design or construction experience with a focus on environmental applications in site remediation, wastewater treatment, or similar
  • Experience overseeing geotechnical field investigations including working with geotechnical and/or environmental drilling contractors, conducting test pits, collecting soil samples, and completing boring and test pit records
  • Understanding of means and methods associated with geotechnical analysis such as laboratory analysis of soil properties, settlement, slope stability, compaction, or similar calculations
  • Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) certification
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong interpersonal skills. Strong organizational abilities
  • Demonstrated professional judgment, consistency and attention to detail
  • Ability and willingness to travel to project sites, often outside of New England - Anticipated travel expected to be less than 20% overnight travel; however, extended travel up to two weeks is possible at times
  • Adaptability and willingness to adjust to client and office needs
  • Flexibility to work outside of normal business hours if required
  • Willingness to accept responsibility and support a wide variety of tasks
  • Strong dedication to maintaining a safe work environment and promoting company safety culture
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Self-starter and avid learner
  • Must be a US citizen
  • Must pass drug test, physical, and background check and must have a satisfactory driving record in accordance with the Company's driving (MVR) policy

Beneficial Qualifications

 

  • MS in Civil/Geotechnical Engineering
  • Professional Engineer registration
  • Construction inspection/oversight experience
  • 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER Training
  • Experience with civil engineering designs including preparation of plans and specifications and design of stormwater facilities and environmental permitting
  • Experience with environmental remediation design or construction projects
  • AutoCAD Civil3D knowledge for developing surface models and earthwork quantities 

Physical Demands

 

  • Field activities may require working in unfavorable weather conditions
  • May lift equipment and carry laboratory samples which require the ability to lift up to 40 pounds
