Job Description

Overview / Responsibilities

Wood is currently seeking a Director of Corporate Health, Safety, Security & Environmental for our Heavy Civils group in the West US. The qualified candidate will plans, direct, and implement organization safety programs to ensure safe, health, secure, and accident-free work environment by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate supervisors and employees. This position will require nationwide travel based on project needs.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Promotes, leads, and engrains a strong safety culture throughout the organization that allows continuous improvement
  • Plans and implements safety policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules and regulations as well as company and customer compliance
  • Develops & implements safety management process which develops a positive safety culture and awareness of the impact of personal behaviors
  • Aligns company goals and objectives to HSSE policies, procedures and management processes
  • Provides concise useful HSSE data to Leadership to align company with core values
  • Establishes regular positive relationships with all internal and external clients – ranging from top executives to help business development with potential customers to the front line employees by gaining their respect and being a resource
  • Prepares and completes HSSE questions and statistics for new business opportunities. Assists with bids attends planning meetings etc.
  • Leads the investigation of all accidents and injuries and cooperates in the preparation of material and evidence for organization use in hearings, lawsuits, and insurance investigations
  • Compiles and submits accident reports required by regulatory agencies
  • Ensures the root causes are identified and effective corrective and preventative actions are implemented
  • Identify lessons learned and ensure that these are implemented to prevent recurrence of incidents
  • Oversees the administration of workers' compensation program, including working with the insurance carrier to reduce employee lost time
  • Prepares and arranges safety exhibits and material for display, promotional work, industry conferences, and exhibitions
  • Represents the organization in community or industry safety groups and programs
  • Prepares studies and analyses of industrial accident causes and hazards to health for use by company personnel and outside agencies
  • Performs inspections or ensures subordinates regularly inspect job sites to detect existing or potential accident and health hazards, determines corrective or preventative measures where indicated, and follows up to ensure measures have been implemented
  • Plans and implements programs, processes, materials and tool box topics to train managers and employees in work site HSSE practices
  • Ensures SPA’s on all projects are properly completed and hazards are identified and minimized
  • Provides information, signs, posters, barriers, and other materials to warn of potential and actual safety hazards and to prevent access to hazardous conditions
  • Purchases, maintains, inspects, calibrates, inventories, etc. all required HSSE equipment and materials.
  • Prepares or ensures all necessary HSSE files and reports are completed for internal and external use
  • Ensures compliance with OSHA record keeping
  • Schedules audits and tests (DOT, noise/air sampling, etc.)

Skills / Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related field required; Master’s degree considered an asset
  • Minimum 20 years of related work experience required
  • OSHA 500 is required
  • Certified Safety Professional or Certified Health and Safety Technician is desirable but not required
  • Ability to travel nationwide as needed 

Physical Demands

 

  • Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; talk or hear and taste or smell
  • Frequently required to stand; walk; sit; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
  • Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms
  • Must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus 

Work Environment

 

  • Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions
  • Occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock; explosives and vibration
  • The noise level in the work environment varies from quiet to very loud depending on if work is being performed in the office or in the field
