Overview / Responsibilities

Terra Nova Technologies (TNT), based near San Diego, designs, supplies, delivers and installs material handling systems for mining and mineral processing, coal, aggregate and cement clients throughout the world.   Our experience includes delivery of mobile stacking system, crushing plant, and conveyor (stockpile, overland, in-pit, and in-plant) projects in 15 countries on 6 continents. We currently hold about 80% of the world market in the manufacture and installation of multiple-lift heap leach stacking systems.


TNT currently has an exciting opportunity for an Electrical Designer/Controls Engineer. A position requiring design, development, troubleshooting, and support of PLC / HMI based control systems. The Control System Engineer must be well organized, have the ability to support multiple projects/assignments, and be able to interface with customers, employees, and travel to project sites for commissioning of equipment. We are looking for someone who has experience in designing some or all of the following electrical systems including:

  • Process control/SCADA systems
  • PLC systems, primary and secondary electrical power distribution, motor controls, etc.
  • Construction / Heavy Industrial project experience
  • Candidates who have experience with conveyor systems, mobile equipment and material handling systems a plus

 Reporting to the Electrical Department Manager, this position is located in our TNT office - Santee, CA. This role has overall responsibility for designer Power Distribution, Motor Controls, VFD Drives, Power Devices and Controls. Key Responsibilities

  • Work in conjunction with Systems Engineering to develop and review project related drawing and documentation packages such as wiring diagrams, bill of materials (BOMs) cable specifications, wiring interconnect diagrams, network interconnect diagrams, manuals, specifications, FAT, SAT, and regulatory submittals
  • Provide technical, guidance, direction, and review of a systems design, development and integration plan. This would include configuration, programming, testing and troubleshooting PLC based control systems, associated components and networks
  • Specify system components and suppliers
  • Assist with the design and specification of PLC driven equipment, fiber optics, networking, panel layout and creation; Generate drawings from circuit schematic design, shop manufacturing through field wiring drawings
  • Strong designing and drafting of equipment and auxiliary components in ACAD
  • Reviewing project documents for scope, presentation and technical accuracy
  • Generate procurement, system operation, system manuals, testing and startup commissioning documentation
  • Maintaining good working relationships and communication with area leads, department managers, clients and other team members to coordinate design
  • Assisting with construction and commissioning of industrial electrical and control systems

Skills / Qualifications

  • Degree or Diploma in Electrical Design technology from an accredited University or College
  • Minimum of 5 years’ direct industrial, mining or process plant experience
  • Proven experience using AutoCAD
  • Minimum of 5 plus years of Industrial Control System design experience
  • Control Panel Layout experience
  • Experience specifying and procuring electrical/control components
  • Proven troubleshooting skills
  • Good vision, up-to-date and in-depth knowledge in the material handling and power automation industry
  • Expertise in 480VAC/240VAC/110VAC/48VDC/24VDC control systems Knowledge of NEC, UL and CE framework
  • Meticulous and attention to details plus great communication skills
  • Perform well under tight schedules and other pressure
  • Travel to project sites around the world for commissioning of equipment
