Job Description

Overview / Responsibilities

Wood is seeking a Structural Iron and Steel Worker to raise, place, and unite iron or steel girders, columns, reinforcing steel, spall plates and other structural members to form completed structures or structural frameworks. May erect metal storage tanks and assemble prefabricated metal buildings. Work hours are typically M-F 8 to 10 hours per day per the needs of the project.


Key Responsibilities

  • Read specifications or blueprints to determine the locations, quantities, or sizes of materials required
    • Review blueprints or specifications to determine work requirements
  • Connect columns, beams, and girders with bolts, following blueprints and instructions from supervisors
    • Install metal structural components
  • Bolt aligned structural steel members in position for permanent riveting, bolting, or welding into place
    • Install metal structural components
  • Verify vertical and horizontal alignment of structural steel members, using plumb bobs, laser equipment, transits, or levels
    • Verify alignment of structures or equipment
  • Cut, bend, tie, join or weld steel pieces, using metal shears, torches, swagging machines welding equipment or other manual or mechanical equipment
    • Cut metal components for installation
    • Weld metal components
  • Weld rebar connections, install twist-on or grouted rebar connectors
  • Install rebar in quantity, size, spacing and dimensions as called for in the plans
  • Fabricate rebar per approved shop drawings and cutting drawings
  • Fabricate metal parts, such as steel frames, columns, beams, or girders, according to blueprints or instructions from supervisors
    • Fabricate parts or components
  • Pull, push, or pry structural steel members into approximate positions for bolting into place.
    • Position structural components
  • Erect shoring equipment as necessary
  • Erect metal or precast concrete components for structures, such as buildings precast beams, precast planks or structural steel components
    • Install metal structural components
  • Force structural steel members into final positions, using turnbuckles, crowbars, jacks, or hand tools
    • Install metal structural components
  • Unload and position prefabricated steel units for hoisting as needed
    • Load or unload materials used in construction or extraction
    • Position structural components
  • Drive drift pins through rivet holes to align rivet holes in structural steel members with corresponding holes in previously placed members
    • Install metal structural components
  • Assemble hoisting equipment or rigging, such as cables, pulleys, or hooks, to move heavy equipment or materials
    • Assemble temporary equipment or structures
  • Dismantle structures or equipment
    • Dismantle equipment or temporary structures

Skills / Qualifications

  • 0-5+ years of related work experience
  • Ability to read shop drawings
  • Ability to work at height
  • Ability to lift more than 35 pounds
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time
  • Willing to work outside trade to assist the project in maintaining production
