Job Description

Overview / Responsibilities

Wood is currently seeking an Electrical & Instrumentation Superintendent at an EPC union project jobsite located in Trenton, New Jersey. Must be able to manage subcontractors responsible for erection of electrical & instrument equipment, and for building electrical & control systems (low voltage power, telecommunications, controls, etc.).


Key Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the project team (project manager, construction manager, quality control, safety, cost & schedule, procurement, other superintendents, and field and office engineers) to ensure that work meets the project expectations, contractual requirements, budget, and schedule
  • Maintain regular communications with subcontractors and vendors to ensure work complies with drawings, specifications, quality standards, and schedule
  • Manage and inspect the day-to-day work of subcontractors in field, and participate in review of the daily work plans as necessary
  • Review and comment (if required) on subcontractor’s methods of construction, manpower levels, material quantities, construction equipment, work schedule, etc.
  • Perform quantity surveys and monitor subcontractor progress against schedule requirements
  • Coordinate work among different subcontractors working in same areas to maximum productivity, avoid conflicts, and ensure safety
  • Assist in resolving construction problems (lack of productivity, work interfaces, poor quality of work, etc.) as required
  • Ensure that subcontractor initiated RFI’s are resolved in timely manner through engineering
  • Ensure that subcontractor initiated Change Order Requests are resolved in timely manner through subcontractor manager
  • Ensure that Field Work Orders are being incorporated into the subcontractor’s work
  • Coordinate with procurement and the material management coordinator to ensure all required materials, equipment, inspections, receiving, storage, etc., support craft activities and project schedule
  • Monitor subcontractor compliance with project safety program requirements; document and ensure corrective measures are implemented
  • Participate in weekly progress meetings with subcontractors
  • Assist construction manager in maintaining communications with unions, resolving jurisdictional disputes, requisitioning required manpower, etc.
  • Perform additional assignments per project manager's and construction manager's direction

Skills / Qualifications

  • Four-year degree in construction management or engineering
  • Minimum of ten (10) years total construction management experience
  • Deep knowledge and understanding of electrical & instrumentation systems required
  • Minimum of five years' design / build experience with electrical systems required
  • Proven experience dealing with union subcontractors in the Northeastern US
  • Working knowledge of company computer systems and software necessary
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage costs and control schedule
  • Strong leadership and management skills required
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, plus demonstrated ability to work with multinational and multi-disciplined personnel
  • Strong client relations skills are a must
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing
  • Ability to read and comprehend complex instructions, correspondence and memos
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete and abstract variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
  • Excellent knowledge of and commitment to safety requirements
  • Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner
  • Understands business implications of decisions
  • Follows through on commitments; meets productivity standards
  • Treats people with respect; works with integrity and ethically
