Overview / Responsibilities

Amec Foster Wheeler is seeking a Process Supervisor to serves as a staff expert in Process Engineering as it relates to the organization’s products and services and has the primary responsibility to manage a group of technical personnel.


Key Responsibilities  

  • Serves as a lead over a group of Engineers or functions as a senior technical specialist responsible for the efficient design and technical execution involved in providing Process Engineering support to the Business Development Group and project teams
  • Involved with developing applications, hypothesis, approaches and concepts which require extensive interpretation, judgment and ingenuity
  • Develops work plans and project schedules and assists in developing hours estimates and scoping efforts for proposals and projects.
  • Independently plans, develops and executes large and/or technically complex engineering studies, projects or assignments with only administrative supervision and is responsible for technical quality and project execution management on projects assigned
  • Acts as a Technical Authority (TA) with department approval responsibility for any of the following deliverables:
    • Process Simulations
    • Process Flow Diagrams (PFD’s) with Heat and Material Balances
    • Process Calculations
    • Process Datasheets
    • Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID’s)
    • Equipment Lists (with associated sizing calculations)
    • Line Lists (with associated sizing calculations and hydraulic calculations)
    • Investigations of technical items - documented in written reports and studies
    • Review and adherence to specifications, regulations, and standards
    • Engineering Design, Commissioning, Startup, and Operating Manuals
  • Other Job functions include:
    • Participate in and/or Support safety meetings such as HAZID, HAZOP, SIL and other Safety Hazard Assessments
    • Coordination with other engineering and design disciplines and primary contact for project management team
    • Ensures that work products produced on projects assigned are in compliance with applicable codes and standards, practices and procedures, cost effective, safe and high quality
    • Coordinates with project manager progress reporting, budgets, schedules, work scope, variances and manpower loading on projects assigned
    • Assists Department Manager in Performance Management (annual review feedback) of personnel assigned to the department

Skills / Qualifications

  • BS in Chemical Engineering is required with certain positions available for BS in Petroleum Engineering; Masters or PhD in Chemical Engineering is preferred.
  • PE (Professional Engineer) license preferred.  
  • 15+ years of experience in practice of Process Design.
  • Years of experience is less important than type, depth and breadth of experiences. Demonstrated abilities and contribution to successful engineering project outcomes are given significant weight.
  • Extensive knowledge of industry standards and specifications, engineering and construction practices. Expected to be a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in at least one area of Process Design.
  • Recognized as a technical expert in the process discipline and has knowledge of advanced principles and techniques of process engineering and knowledge of competing and alternative design techniques.
  • Ability to understand deliverables from other engineering disciplines and provide Process support and review when requested.
  • Solid awareness of trends and economic conditions affecting the technical field and understanding of internal economic factors affecting decisions (costs, margins, profit impact of decisions).
  • Ability to assist in developing engineering work processes and procedures along with serving as champion for product design and work process improvements.
  • Ingenuity and initiative to coordinate problem resolution and to execute the schedule requirements, project scope, and budget within a team environment. Process Lead experience including process improvement successes, managerial accounting, budget preparation and cost control responsibility.
  • Advanced computer skills with MS Office programs and experience with process simulation software (Hysys, PROII, or equivalent) particularly in providing practicality check based on past project experience.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in mentoring, project planning, change management, progress management, interface management and final level of technical assurance.
  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills for inter-departmental and external company interaction.
  • Effective communication (oral, written and listening) skills with proficiency in technical writing and comprehensive documentation.
  • Effective customer presentation skills and technical publication skills.
  • Ingenuity and initiative to coordinate problem solution and to execute the schedule requirements with a team environment.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and willingness to assume additional or new responsibilities readily.
  • Works effectively with project team to provide assistance to Customers, other Engineering Disciplines, Equipment Suppliers and Commercial Group regarding process related information.
  • Asks questions or seeks technical assistance when necessary only on extremely unusual or complex problems from company personnel or external experts.
  • Ability to maintain regular attendance as per work schedule agreed with manager (may require working an adjusted work schedule based on project assigned and work overtime if warranted).
  • Prepares or supervises the preparation of technical evaluations of Licensor or Vendor proposals.
  • Leads effective technical presentations and discussions with Customers, Vendors and internally within the organization when appropriate. Effective technical publication skills.

Work Environment:

Typically spends 90% of time in an office environment.

Travel may be required, both domestic and international for technical meetings/conferences, project meetings and/or visits to site, client’s office, production facility or industrial area. When visiting clients facilities, there may be environmental exposures including noise, fumes, outdoor or extreme weather conditions.

  • While performing the duties of this job, is regularly required to sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
  • Is occasionally required to stand, walk and stoop, kneel, or crouch.
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
  • May need to drive, walk, climb stairs or ladders, and wear personal protective equipment (hard hat, protective foot gear, eye protection, other site-specific equipment)
