Overview / Responsibilities

Wood is looking for candidates for an Entry-level Engineer position in our Naperville, IL office serving the US Nuclear Industry. This position will support project teams in the design and stress analysis of industrial plant equipment including piping and support systems.


Key Responsibilities


This position will offer the candidate the opportunity to utilize and expand your academic background in stress analysis and design.


In providing technical analytical support for project teams, the candidate will be involved in the design of new power plants, modifications to existing power generation facilities, and plant system betterment. This is an entry-level position that offers a variety of interesting and challenging opportunities. The candidate will interface with other engineers on a project team and with the client to ensure that all client requirements are satisfied. You will work on major engineering projects for upgrades and modifications to nuclear power plants in the areas of:

  • Equipment and piping supports
  • Piping analysis and ASME Section III or B31.1 design
  • AISC steel design codes
  • Component stress analysis
  • Mechanics of Fluids
  • Structural frame analysis
  • Seismic, thermal and other dynamic loading analyses
  • Plant impact reviews and evaluations
  • Assessment of existing structures, development of retrofit type designs

Project work will involve development of drawings, calculations, reports, specifications, engineering change packages, and client database interfaces. Strong opportunities for development to lead projects and development of discipline specific plant modification packages while learning internal and client processes. Daily communication/interaction with project teams. There is the potential for travel to client offices to provide on-site consultation.


Effectively communicate with other technical and non-technical disciplines and customers.


Ensure effective management of assigned tasks. Assume responsibility for cost, schedule, quality and budget control of assigned tasks.


Apply academic knowledge to job/role accountabilities. Provide support on specific portions of larger projects and/or work assignments.

Skills / Qualifications

Essential skills and experience

  • This position requires a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, General Engineering, or Theoretical & Applied Mechanics from an ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission-approved program with a concentration in stress analysis
  • An understanding of the practical application of structural engineering including applying systems, principles, techniques, and Code procedures to a project design
  • Strong problem solving capability and ability to solve complex spatial reviews for integrating new components with existing structures
  • A commitment to safety, incorporating company safety values into your work both in the office and site based
  • Willingness to ask questions and respectfully challenge peers
  • Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principals involved in the production of technical plans, drawings, and models
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Candidates who are able to work lawfully in the US without sponsorship only, Wood will not sponsor an employment VISA to fill this position

Valued but not required skills and experience

  • Masters of Science degree from an ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission-approved program
  • Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, and designation as an Engineer in Training
  • Internship or work experience in a design or construction firm
  • Experience performing computer stress analysis
