Job Description

Overview / Responsibilities

Amec Foster Wheeler is seeking a Technical Safety Engineer, with particular experience in active and passive fire protection engineering, to join our team in Houston, TX. In general, the Technical Safety discipline is responsible for ensuring that a project wide approach (involving all disciplines) to designing for safety is adopted, and that a structured process is adopted to keep residual risks As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP). Focus is on the control of Major Accident Hazards (MAH) associated with the project.

 

The Engineer IV – Technical Safety has various project related Technical Safety duties. Most tasks will be conducted independently based on previous experience, with direct supervision provided on an as-needed basis. If required he/she will mentor and provide guidance to more junior staff.

 

In general Technical Safety duties are associated with the following (where applicable):

  • Design of active and passive fire protection systems
  • Provide input to Fire and Gas Detection systems
  • Development of philosophies, strategies and plans for loss prevention, covering: shutdown, Hazardous Area Classification, gas and fire detection, fire protection, and escape and evacuation
  • Development of specifications and data sheets of safety systems
  • Implementation of Inherently Safer Design practices and adopting a risk-based design
  • Participation as the Technical Safety representative in design review related workshops, such as HAZID, HAZOP and SIL/LOPA
  • Conducting risk-based safety studies and analysis, as part of a Formal Safety Assessment
  • Development and maintenance of Hazard / Risk Registers, Performance Standards, and Cases for Safety or Safety Cases

The Technical Safety IV may be required to assist in providing man-hour estimates, maintaining man-hour budgets and otherwise assisting the discipline lead.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Performs safety engineering calculations, using MS Office or specialized software e.g. risk and consequence calculations, calculations related to flaring and venting, hazardous area classification, firewater demand estimates
  • Participates in design reviews (e.g. HAZID, ENVID, HAZOP). This could be as facilitator, scribe or Technical Safety representative
  • Prepares client reports / documentation on the project work conducted; This includes philosophies, analysis work, safety engineering calculations, design reviews, Performance Standards and specifications
  • Prepares Formal Safety Assessment studies, prepares Safety Cases (if required)
  • Consults with client and other disciplines in order to conduct the activities above
  • May travel occasionally in order to carry out the above activities
  • May assist in checking the work of others
  • Procurement of safety related equipment
  • Performs other duties as assigned

 

Skills / Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Science required; Bachelor’s degree in Engineering preferred; Master’s degree preferred
  • PE (Professional Engineer) preferred
  • 7+ years of relevant experience
  • General interest in developments in the field of Technical and Process Safety
  • Knowledge of the application of inherently safer design and risk-based design on projects
  • Understanding of concepts of process shutdown, fire and gas detection, relief / flare systems, passive / active firewater protection, and emergency response – for most of these systems knowledge can be applied on projects
  • Understanding of process engineering, including associated drawings and schematics
  • Understanding of applicable legislation (international and local), as well as codes and standards
  • Ability to apply good safety engineering practices on projects
  • Advanced computer skills with MS Office programs
  • Understanding of software tools used for safety engineering, with advanced skills for most software
  • Oral and written communication skills with good vocabulary, good grammar and the ability to independently compose any required written communications
  • Ability to prepare accurate, effective, complete and easily understood written communications and reports
  • Ability to work in a team environment and willingness to assume leadership role
  • Ability to maintain an agreed work schedule
  • Willingness to comply with applicable laws and regulations, the Company’s Code of Business Conduct and other Company policies and procedures

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus
  • May need to drive, walk, climb stairs or ladders, and wear personal protective equipment (hard hat, protective foot gear, eye protection, other site-specific equipment)
