Overview / Responsibilities

Amec Foster Wheeler is currently seeking a Mid-Level Environmental Biologist or Scientist to fill a full-time position with our Denver, CO Environmental team. This individual could have either a strong wildlife or botany background.


Key Responsibilities

  • The position is approximately 50% field work and 50% office work on a variety of projects, including commercial, industrial, state and federal sites
  • Biology field activities will focus on wildlife identification and threatened and endangered species surveys, but may also include wetland surveys, native plant surveys, etc. Will utilize GPS, compass, quad maps and/or aerial photographs
  • Office work involve researching literature and regulatory requirements; preparing reports (including BA/BE, NEPA documents), maps and charts; and performing routine calculations.
  • Interprets data. With experience, may write complete reports
  • Prepares field reports, internal correspondence, sections of formal reports
  • Follows company safety standards and site safety standards in accordance with Amec Foster Wheeler policy
  • Will travel to project sites throughout Colorado and the western US; Between 25% and 50% overnight travel
  • Environmental field activities may include soil and groundwater sampling, site investigations, and remediation activities

Skills / Qualifications


  • BS or MS in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science or related scientific discipline or technical field
  • 3 – 6 + years of related experience
  • Must be a self-starter with excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Western US fauna and/or flora knowledge and experience is required; Prefer experience with fauna identification, and flora experience a plus
  • Skilled at basic or standard field procedures and techniques
  • Strong computer skills for database work and proficiency in MS Office
  • Demonstrated experience working successfully in a team environment
  • Willingness to work outside normal business hours as required; May include weekend work
  • Willingness to travel to project sites in Colorado and surrounding states; Between 25% and 50% overnight travel
  • Must pass drug test, physical, background check and must have a satisfactory driving record in accordance with the Company's driving policy


  • Bureau of Land Management and/or US Forest Service project experience
  • Current USFWS permits or ability to be permitted for T&E species surveys
  • NEPA knowledge and experience
  • Section 7 of the Endangered Species Act threatened and endangered species experience
  • Experience with preparation of Biological Assessments and Biological Evaluations
  • Section 404 of the Clean Water Act delineating/permitting experience a plus
  • OSHA and or MSHA certificates
  • GIS experience

Physical Demands

  • Field activities may require working in unfavorable weather conditions
  • Ability to hike, lift equipment and willingness to work extended hours (10+ hour days), as needed
