Overview / Responsibilities

Wood Process & Energy is currently recruiting for a Senior Mechanical Estimator. This position is a permanent staff position located in our Tucker, Georgia Office. *Wood will not sponsor an employment visa to fill this position. 


The Sr. Mechanical Estimator is an experienced project / contract estimating professional capable of developing estimates for major industrial projects. This role is specific to an accomplished discipline specialist or a generalist with a wide range of experience in estimating for industrial construction projects. The Sr. Mechanical Estimator will have the experience necessary to lead an estimate from inception to completion and to manage the people necessary to get that accomplished. The Sr. Mechanical Estimator reports to the Manager of Estimating.


Key Responsibilities

  • Implementing and managing estimating services to clients, management, project management, and departments, including procedures and responsibilities
  • Handling several small projects simultaneously, either independently or by providing direction to other estimating staff
  • As a lead estimator on larger projects, directing and managing other estimating personnel
  • As a senior estimator on a mega-project, reporting to the Manager of Estimating and directing project staff to ensure integration with overall project procedures and format
  • During estimate reviews, determining if estimate parameters fall within accepted norms for the project estimate location and type of facility

Estimating Duties

  • Assisting in the interpretation of routine documentation, specifications, and drawings to determine material costs
  • Preparing routine control budgets
  • Participating in internal Estimating Department estimate reviews
  • Assisting in the preparation of cost studies to support the selection of economical designs
  • Assisting other estimators with cost research and maintenance of the estimating database
  • Assisting in the preparation of estimates for trends, contract scope changes, or extra work orders
  • Understanding and being able to apply the differences in estimate classes and how they are used
  • Being willing and available to accept estimating positions at the project site to enhance estimating knowledge
  • Developing estimate reconciliations as required
  • Possibly leading small estimate comparisons for inclusion within the completed estimate
  • Defining the intent and use of the estimate based on an understanding of the proposal or contract terms
  • Designing or assisting in the design of a WBS suitable for capturing all cost components
  • Liaising with the Client to determine additional requirements and responding to Client needs as appropriate
  • Understanding and using the Timberline Estimating program as the primary tool for executing the estimate
  • Overseeing the development of discipline MTOs, material pricing, and labour work-hour units for estimates and change orders
  • Executing indirect and conceptual estimates with minimal direction
  • Providing proposal and study support as required
  • Participating in estimate and Client reviews as required
  • Preparing the basis of estimate
  • Leading the development of the total project estimate
  • Leading or providing input to the estimate risk analysis and providing the Client with contingency recommendations
  • Preparing final estimate summaries and analyzing each section for scope, pricing, and completeness
  • Arranging and conducting department, discipline, and project reviews on estimates

Decision-Making and Supervisory Responsibilities Include

  • Planning, organizing, and scheduling of work
  • Evaluating and recommending changes in methods and systems
  • Assisting in training junior staff by providing guidance on work methods and procedures
  • Reviewing work in accordance with corporate goals, professional judgement, and management acceptance
  • Delegate responsibility and assure its proper completion
  • Reviewing the work of subordinates for overall completion of objectives
  • Assisting in training junior staff by providing guidance on work methods and procedures
  • Exercising superior judgement in administering the estimating function

Skills / Qualifications

  • 4 year Engineering or Construction Management degree (preferred but not required) or equivalent technical training and related experience 
  • Minimum of 6 to 10 years similar industrial construction estimating experience required 
  • Knowledge of construction project practices and procedures is required
  • Estimating experience with large EPC power generation projects (required)
  • Advanced knowledge of construction engineering technology, codes, standards, etc. (required)
  • An in-depth understanding of the interdependence and relationship between other functional units (required)
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, plus demonstrated ability to manage a team of varied disciplines (required)
  • MUST HAVE previous experience estimating in industrial power generation & industrial construction projects
  • Knowledge of related construction codes, standards, etc.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, plus demonstrated ability to work across varied disciplines
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to read and comprehend complex instructions, correspondence and memos
  • Ability to write simple correspondence
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the organization
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete and abstract variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
