Job Description

Overview / Responsibilities

Wood currently has a 3-month Solar Engineering Internship available in our San Francisco office. The qualified candidate will perform diverse tasks in engineering, design and project management of utility-scale ground-mount solar power plants. Assignments include: assisting with project layouts; performing engineering calculations; assisting with solar modeling; performance calculation.


Key Responsibilities

  • Determine best choice of components (solar panels, inverters, structure) to meet project goals
  • Use modeling and estimation software such as PVsyst to create production estimates including assumptions for losses due to equipment, electrical losses, shading and soiling
  • Convert specifications and modeling output into an initial layout using AutoCAD
  • Use internal tools and industry standards to optimize orientation and layout, taking into account project requirements and constraints such as scope, schedule, budget and geography
  • Design projects compliant with National Electrical Code (NEC) and other relevant codes or standards including, but not limited to, American National Standards Institute (ANSI), International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and Underwriters’ Laboratories (UL)
  • Perform calculations for losses, conductor sizing, equipment rating, fusing and protection consistent with NEC, ANSI, IEC and UL
  • Calculate performance of commissioned projects using Excel and other tools
  • Prepare performance reports of new and operational projects
  • Support troubleshooting and resolution of project engineering, construction and performance issues, where applicable

Skills / Qualifications

  • No solar energy experience required, however, passion for renewable energy is important
  • Currently enrolled in a community college or university program in a STEM field
  • Familiarity with electrical/electronic concepts such as Ohm’s Law, resistive losses, power conversion equipment such as inverters and transformers
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Familiarity with software packages such as Excel and AutoCAD an asset
  • Willingness and ability to operate and learn in a team environment
